Frequently
Asked Questions
Are
these characters based on real Puerto Rican mythology?
Yes, some
of them are based on specific mythological characters of Puerto Rican
mythology, only that they were remade or reshaped to fit my comic book
purposes. Others like Carey and El Brujo are completely made up.
Why
do you take so long to update your comic strip?
Well lets
see. I work 45+ hours a week on my regular job. I have two beautiful
kids that need constant attention. And I do this because it was always
a dream of mine to do my own comic book, I do not have real time to
spend updating my strip.
Do
you get paid to draw this?
No, I do
it for the love of the craft.
Why
are there parts that are in a weird language?
It is not
a weird language, it's Spanish. The story is based in modern day Puerto
Rico, some sentences will be in Spanish followed by the same sentence
in English by another character. All character names will be in Spanish
while the story is written in English. Why do I do this? Well, Puerto
Ricans are funny, our native language is Spanish but since we are a
Common Wealth of the United States of America, we also speak English.
Therefore, current and future generations speak in a mix form called
Spanglish.
What
does Alacran mean?
Alacrán
[a-lah-kran]. Puerto Rican (Boricua) for centipede.
Any of numerous predaceous, chiefly nocturnal arthropods constituting
the class Chilopoda, having an elongated, flattened body composed of
from 15 to 173 segments, each with a pair of legs, the first pair being
modified into poison fangs. [www.dictionary.com]. There are
many reasons why this is the flagship name for Alacrán Comics, but when
it comes down to it, I just like it. Side note: alacráns
are found all over the world, in 90% of spanish speaking countries,
the word alacrán means scorpion. In Puerto Rico it is refered to as
a centipede.
Is your superhero named after Marvel Comics Toro?
No.
Toro is not to be confused with Timely Comics's (Marvel Comis) 1940's
Human Torch.
What
is that wierd Mexican logo thing on your website?
First off,
it is not Mexican, it is Boricua (Puerto Rican). It is the
Taíno tribal sun call "sol Taíno". The sol Taino
is encircled inside two ferocious centipedes, which in Boriken-Puerto
Rico (Borinquen), they are nasty, massive and terrifying. This
is the logo for Alacrán Comics. It is old culture encased inside a scary
vicious circle of modern day man. Through Carey, readers will hopefully
learn a bit about modern day Boricuas and our culture.
